Of all the reasons why Qwikster is a horrible name for what used to be Netflix’s signature DVD-by-mail service, the fact that @qwikster was already taken on Twitter is one of my personal favorites.
As you probably already know, a good rule of thumb before creating a name for a business, organization or product is to check Twitter in addition to Facebook, domain names, etc. to see whether or not your name is available if nothing else but to keep someone else from snatching it up.
That a company the size of Netflix overlooked this detail is almost as embarrassing as the new name for the service for which I am now a customer (the selection with Netflix streaming was bad enough with the Starz catalog that’s going away in February). Of course, it might not matter a whole lot when the company gets sold as some are speculating will happen next.
